American Support for Afghanistan Returns From First Benefit Distribution Trip from Afghanistan.
Santa Barbara, CA - August 27, 2003 - American Support for Afghanistan (ASA), a nonprofit organization, announces the completion of its Benefit Distribution Trip to Afghanistan on August 2, 2003. Homaira Zahir, president and founder, successfully delivered $10,000 worth of educational and medical supplies to a local Afghan hospital and an elementary school.
ASA made its humanitarian efforts a reality when Zahir donated school supplies and teacher kits to the students of Speenkalai School located in Kabul.
"It was utterly disheartening to see elementary school kids sit in outside classrooms in 100 degree heat without any proper educational supplies, "says Zahir. "We knew our efforts were successful when we saw the kids smiling faces as they opened their school packets."
In addition, Zahir delivered medical supplies from American doctors to Aliabad hospital to assist in the reconstruction of the destroyed public health services in Afghanistan.
When Homaira Zahir left Afghanistan in 1989 she could not forget the destruction and destitution she left behind. These horrible memories have propelled her to develop an organization committed to restoring the infrastructure of a nation in desperate need of relief work and aid.
ASA has many short-term goals for this coming year. Other projects include making the Benefit Distribution Trips an annual event, assist with Afghan teachers' salaries, donate computers and printers, and eventually, build classrooms when more funding can be secured.
ASA also plans to sponsor doctors and nurses to travel in Afghanistan where they can provide six to eight week educational courses to Afghanistan's medical personal. In addition, ASA would like to assist Alawadeen Orphanage with basic daily necessities, such as clothing, blankets, school kits, toys and a computer center.
American Support for Afghanistan is a non-sectarian, non-governmental and strictly apolitical nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration and continuing development of Afghanistan. Its mission is to contribute to the development of Afghanistan through direct funding and providing material goods for healthcare and educational services.
